This is a small piece of rough Australian opal that I picked up last year (2004) and have finally got around to working with. I don't have any real experience cutting rough opal, or any stones for that matter, but I just liked the way the light played through this one and decided to see what I could do. I've been letting the stone determine its own shape, just working it against fine wet sandpaper, and since it's still got some bumps and chipped places to remove, it will probably be smaller, and perhaps a different shape when it's done.

After cutting and shaping it a bit more, and polishing it up, I mounted it in a 5x13 Turk's-head bezel and here it is:
