I carefully messured sections of gold and silver to match the places in the knot where the points of the stars would appear, and spliced them together, alternating pure silver and twisted 18K gold.

This is the beginning of a five-lead six-bight knot, with the gold segments pulled through close to where they will finish up.

Here is what it looks like when the knot is completed, with all the segments of gold pulled into alignment, mostly. I've found it very difficult to get them to line up exactly, but the star fairly leaps out at you once they are close to right.
